Being a geek isn’t all about sci-fi and video games. Mostly, but not entirely. We can appreciate the finer things in life, such as good art. It might not be your typical fanfare but art can be different things to different people. One artist that I have been a fan of for some time is UK based, and noted “street” artist, D*Face.
Born Dean Stockton he grew up heavily influenced by the skate scene as well as graffiti art, citing Thrasher and Subway Art as well as hip hop artists like Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys. Stockton attended school for design and illustration all the while honing his skills outside of the classroom. Once he got a look at the Obey Giant campaign everything came together for him.
Most people in the US probably got their first taste of D*Face during this years Oscars. Two disfigured, seven foot tall statues were displayed with one reading “Beauty Is Just A Slice Away” and the other “Beauty is skin deep.” There was no malicious intent to go along with the zombie Oscars, but rather just the obvious statement. For those of you who may not be familiar with this story then you likely got a glimpse at his work on Christina Aguilera’s latest album Bionic.
His latest work can be seen in something he has held close for a long time, skateboarding. In collaboration with REAL Skateboards a limited edition deck line will be available soon. There will be three styles available based on his 2009 NY gallery “All Your Dreams Belong to Us.” The Brock, Ramondetta and Busenitz are available now for pre order.
It’s almost as if D*Face’s career is coming about full circle. Coming back to a place where all of his ideas and influences began. If his childhood self could see him now, I’m sure he would grab one of those decks and take to the rails.
